R\u00c1K \u2013 Faroese for \u2018current\u2019 \u2013 has specialized in getting to the bottom of complex matters. Detecting and visualizing deep lying ocean parameters. This involves physical measurements, analysis of data and computational simulation to address what impact equipment has on a given location and whether the equipment can in fact handle the occasionally brutal conditions in the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n
\nThe techniques and skills we harness here in the Faroe Islands can be put to use all over the world. Especially, in sites with extreme weather conditions. In that sense, R\u00c1K\u2019s home base is almost optimal. When you have grown up in the environment, you kind of get the feel of it, Ph.D. Heini Winthereig Rasmussen, founder and CEO of R\u00c1K, says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Looking slightly ahead, knowledge of sub sea level factors can become highly valuable for the North Atlantic isles.<\/p>\n
\nThere is tremendous potential for the Faroe Islands in the use of marine technology. Hopefully, we are close to significant breakthroughs within aquaculture at exposed sites, wave energy, offshore wind and tidal energy. Truly exciting possibilities, Heini says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Following a Master\u2019s degree in Civil Engineering (Solid Mechanics), Heini worked in plant and process construction support in the oil industry in Denmark, performing calculations on machinery and equipment such as pressure vessels for refineries. However, without actively seeking to change his line of work, he found himself stepping onto a new path.<\/p>\n
Specialist by choice, Ph.D. by coincidence<\/h3>\n
Heini hadn\u2019t thought about becoming a researcher, until at an event for Faroese expats in Copenhagen he was introduced to Fiskaaling, a part public-part private entity in the Faroe Islands researching, developing and advising within biotechnology and the farming of water-based animals and plants. The company was looking for a Ph.D.-student to anchor a research project focused on salmon farming.<\/p>\n
\nI was intrigued. My job at that time had become slightly repetitive, a bit too much like working at a conveyor belt. But there was still a lot to think over. I hadn\u2019t previously seen myself as a potential researcher and although a lot of changes were occurring in my native Faroe Islands, most of my friends were living abroad, studying or working, and I hadn\u2019t fully envisioned moving back home, Heini says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
But the pull of the deep sea prevailed and in 2012 Heini was the first ever industrial Ph.D. student to be enrolled in the University of the Faroe Islands, in a collaboration between Fiskaaling and with funding from Research Council Faroe Islands. As the title indicates, his thesis – Flow Through and Around a Group of Fish Farming Cages \u2013 deep dived into how ocean currents affect salmon farming equipment in the sea.<\/p>\n
Ocean currents control the ecosystem, supplying oxygen and removing waste material, so through sea measurements and subsequent analysis and computational models, the research project aimed at supplying new ways to improve planning, efficiency and ultimately profitability in the salmon farming industry.<\/p>\n
Unlocking the researcher\u2019s commercial potential<\/p>\n
Upon completing his thesis, Heini struck a deal with SEV, the inter-municipal power company supplying the 17 inhabited North Atlantic islands with electricity, to evaluate to which effect tidal energy can support SEV\u2019s ambition of relying 100 % on renewable energy sources by 2030. So R\u00c1K was founded. And in the process, Heini tapped into the resources at T\u00f3rshavn\u2019s start-up incubator, Hugskoti\u00f0, for guidance.<\/p>\n
\nHow do you start a business? How do you run it? Bookkeeping, marketing, sales. My focus was research, so all of this was new to me, he says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Along the way, R\u00c1K has received funding through Vinnuframi, a national initiative that provides support to innovative trade and industry projects. And five years on from initially moving into the co-op space on the harbor of the Faroese capital, Heini is still a resident of Hugskoti\u00f0, bouncing ideas back and forth with other business owners and entrepreneurs and using his network to further develop R\u00c1K.<\/p>\n
Heini\u2019s research approach is intact in his work, customers mainly supplied by the salmon industry. He senses, that the benefit of hardcore underwater data as the premise for improved decision-making is really beginning to dawn on the private sector. Or as Heini says, perfectly combining his university background and business acumen in a single sentence:<\/p>\n

To professionals in the steel industry, A4 refers to a marine grade of stainless steel with a slightly higher chrome and molybdenum content, which gives it increased resistance in rough outdoor environments. Such as in the North Atlantic.<\/p>
However, in the Faroe Islands A4 is much more than that as the steel grade has lent its name to a highly successful supplier of equipment and material to industrial customers. While the company A4 started out in steel and still deals in that strong mixture of iron and carbon, the business has long since added roughly 100.000 further items to its product catalogue. If you pass by a busy building site on one of the 17 inhabited islands and see a small cylindrical rivet lying around, chances are A4 supplied it.<\/p>
Conventional wisdom might suggest that to set up shop in the steel business, you would need deep pockets and an abundance of experience. Not the case for A4. In fact, it might seem as if Faroese entrepreneur D\u00e1vid \u00e1 R\u00f3gvi Isaksen made it his personal mission to prove it otherwise.<\/p>
\u201cI was 21, had 80.000 kroner in savings and basically just gave it a go. I started out with a single client because I knew there was a gap in the market. Today, we have more than 200 customers and we\u2019re still only scratching the surface,\u201d D\u00e1vid says.<\/p>
80.000 kroner meant D\u00e1vid could stock nuts, bolts, screws and the like. With a slight increase in cash flow he added sheets, pipes and fittings and then included goods used for processing stainless steel: grinding wheels, safety equipment, chemicals. Today, A4 supplies industries such as the metal industry, construction, automotive, off-shore salmon farming and contractors.<\/p>
Find the gap<\/strong><\/h3>
When D\u00e1vid was starting out as an apprentice in the tool and hardware business, he identified a group of items not there and began to wonder: Why do our customers never ask us for these specific items?<\/p>
He observed that the products were used frequently in building sites and by contractors all over the Faroe Islands and came to the conclusion that customers bought them abroad. In short, that\u2019s how he figured out where the gap in the Faroese market was.<\/p>
\u201cI went with the assumption that I could proactively sell and provide guidance for Faroese customers better than a foreign supplier because of my understanding of local conditions. Being from here, you get local customs, you understand the lead time to isolated islands. It helps to fully grasp the climate and the weather here too, you know,\u201d D\u00e1vid says.<\/p>
He established the business in 2016 and spent the first couple of years in the startup co-op Hugskoti\u00f0 located on T\u00f3rshavn\u2019s harbor. Fellow residents from the early days fondly remember an ever growing storage room \u2013 which happened to be the co-op\u2019s printer room \u2013 and an energetic young man with remarkable people-skills and a nailed on ability to spot openings in the market.<\/p>
\u201cWhen growing up, I was always told that I had extraordinary gifts of speech. Whether meant positively or not, it meant selling came naturally to me. I thoroughly enjoyed it. And still do as a matter of a fact,\u201d D\u00e1vid says.<\/p>
Switching gears and roles<\/strong><\/h3>
As the business progressed, D\u00e1vid went through the various phases that many fellow entrepreneurs pass through. From overseeing all aspects of the business, to hiring people, becoming more administrative and taking on a management role.<\/p>
\u201cStarting out, you have almost unlimited energy. You work three days straight, have a little sleep and then go full throttle for three days again. Then the business grows, more and more commitments are piled on, buying, selling, financing, growing, obligations towards customers, hiring employees, it\u2019s easy to lose focus. And then you lose a little energy,\u201d D\u00e1vid reflects.<\/p>
He trimmed the business and got back to what he finds exciting. Today he focuses on growth, selling and visiting customers and suppliers, staying in touch. His wife handles the administrative side of the business. They own the business together. Split right down the middle, 50 % each. She came onboard when the number of customers had reached 1.<\/p>
\u201cA4 may have been labelled a one-man-business but it\u2019s credit to my wife that A4 is where it is today. She made it possible to start a company at the same time as we were starting a family. That has been the biggest gift imaginable. Later on, she assumed the administrative roles in the business allowing me to focus on sales and growth,\u201d D\u00e1vid says.<\/p>
A4 the company seems to have graduated from the startup phase in flying colors and shown it\u2019s a more than viable business.
